Capcom says the first new Onimusha in more than 20 years cleared a million units worldwide on its first day, and that one day of sales has pushed the whole series past 10 million.
Capcom put the numbers out on Monday 7 September through its investor relations site. Onimusha: Way of the Sword passed 1 million units worldwide on launch day, Friday 4 September. That single day also took lifetime sales of the series, which goes back to the first game in 2001, past 10 million. There's no platform breakdown, so there's no way of telling how the Switch 2 version did next to PS5 and PC.
If you missed the launch, this is a swordplay action game with Miyamoto Musashi as the lead, set in Edo-era Kyoto. It's out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Capcom credits the run of demos and hands-on events before release for getting it in front of people, and the date itself was pulled forward to 4 September back in July. It also picked up two awards at gamescom at the end of August.
Capcom's own framing is that this is the model now: a major title every year, plus older series that haven't had a game in a while getting a proper new entry. Onimusha is the first test of that, and an Okami sequel was announced alongside it back in December 2024, so that's presumably next.
On Steam it's A$107.95 at full price, checked this morning. There's a boxed version on PS5 and Switch 2 at the usual Australian retailers. Steam is the only price I could confirm myself, so if you want a physical copy, have a look at our Onimusha price guide before paying full whack.
