Shogun 2 is the game a lot of Total War players still name as the best in the series. The Complete Edition packs the main campaign together with the Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai expansions and every clan and unit pack that used to be sold on its own. The one thing left out is the Blood Pack, which SEGA says is down to age ratings.

The update list is long for a game that is 15 years old. Creative Assembly, working with a studio called MATABOO, has moved it to 64-bit, reworked the lighting, shadows and textures, and added interface scaling for 1440p and 4K screens plus ultrawide monitor support. Controls have been modernised and there are colourblind options. Mods now run through Mod.io inside the game, and Creative Assembly says mods made for the original Shogun 2 won't work with the new version.

The two headline additions are a full Japanese voiceover, with Chinese voice and text alongside it, and more than 50 minor clans that were always on the map but could never be picked at the start of a campaign.

SEGA has priced it at £34.99, €39.99 or US$39.99. The Steam page is live in Australia but shows no price yet. Anyone who already owns Shogun 2 on Steam gets two things. Any DLC they are missing for the original game is added to their library free, and they get 75 per cent off the Complete Edition from launch until 12 November. A Steam purchase also includes the original game and its DLC. Copies from the Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store or GOG include the Complete Edition only.

There is one more change. From 28 September, the original Shogun 2 will no longer be sold on its own on Steam. Existing owners keep it and can keep playing.

Launch is set for 4pm UK time on 13 October, which is 1am AEST on 14 October in Brisbane, or 2am in the daylight saving states. It is Windows only. For anyone who has owned Shogun 2 for years, the loyalty discount makes this a cheap way back in. For newcomers, it is the whole game and everything released for it in a single purchase.
