Square Enix announced Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- overnight and put it on sale in the same breath. It's the first time this 1993 game has been sold outside Japan, 33 years on.
Torneko is the merchant from Dragon Quest IV, and in 1993 Chunsoft gave him his own game on the Super Famicom: go into a dungeon that's laid out differently every time, grab what you can, and get out before you die and lose it all. That game became the Mystery Dungeon series, which went on to spawn Shiren the Wanderer, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Chocobo's Dungeon and a lot of the ideas that modern roguelikes take for granted. Japan has had it for three decades. Nobody else has, until today.
The Classic HD version is a cleaned-up presentation of the original rather than a remake, so expect the 16-bit game with sharper visuals and modern conveniences. It's on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch and Steam, and the Steam version has a free interactive streaming add-on in beta that lets viewers mess with the run. Steam lists it at $36.95 in Australia. Console store prices weren't up when we checked, and Square Enix's release lists no mobile version for the West.
