Kwalee and developer MAETH have put SPRAWL zero out on every current platform at once. It's a prequel to 2023's SPRAWL and it wears its early-2000s console shooter influences on its sleeve.
You play FIVE, a cybernetically enhanced soldier working for a military junta in a collapsing cyberpunk city, sent to take out the leader of a techno-religious cult. That's the setup for a fast single-player campaign built around handcrafted levels with multiple routes and a lot of verticality, in the style of the shooters that came after Halo and F.E.A.R. rather than the Doom-style ones most retro shooters copy.
The hook is the toolkit. Gravity Gloves let you grab weapons and objects from a distance and throw them, a Gravity Shield catches bullets and sends them back, bullet time slows things down so you can bend shots mid-air, and a Rushdown move makes you briefly invulnerable while you charge. There are more than 40 weapons. MAETH says enemy squads talk to each other and coordinate, using flanks, covering fire and grenades to push you out of cover, which is what made those old F.E.A.R. fights feel alive.
It's out on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Price is US$24.99 (€24.99 / £20.99), and there's a 20% launch discount for the first two weeks on Steam, Xbox and Switch 2, and for selected PlayStation Plus members. A Deluxe Edition adds an artbook and a 17-track soundtrack. Steam also has bundles pairing it with Trepang2, Turbo Overkill and Severed Steel if you're building a retro shooter collection.
Worth knowing before you buy it for a teenager: Steam's own content note says it contains graphic violence, and the tags include gore. This is an adult shooter in the classic mould, not a family game. The Switch 2 version is the interesting one for handheld play, and it's the first time the series has been on a Nintendo console.
