Capcom confirmed the new date in an official press release on 2 July. Way of the Sword now lands on Friday 4 September 2026, across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It's the first brand-new Onimusha game in over 20 years, so the earlier date is a nice surprise for a series a lot of us thought had gone quiet for good.

If you missed the reveals, here's the shape of it. Way of the Sword is a Japanese dark-fantasy action game starring the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, set in an Edo-era Kyoto that's been twisted by clouds of malice. You play a warrior carrying the demon powers of the Oni, cutting through monsters with sharp, sword-led combat and a story built around a cast of unusual characters. Capcom says the series has sold more than 9.1 million games since the first one back in 2001.

The three-week shift matters more than it looks. September fills up fast with big releases, so grabbing an earlier slot gives Way of the Sword a bit of clear air before the rush. It also puts a proper single-player action game on the calendar right at the start of the month.
