Nintendo shadow-dropped a Mario Kart World update during the Direct, and it's the retro one people have been asking for since launch. Version 1.8.0 is free and it's live now.
The headline is ten courses from Super Mario Kart on the SNES: Mario Circuit 1, 2 and 3, Ghost Valley 1, 2 and 3, Choco Island 1 and 2, Vanilla Lake 1 and Koopa Beach 1. They run as standalone races, and instead of item boxes they use the original game's question-mark panels on the road, which is a nice touch if you grew up with the 1992 version. They're flat and they're short, which is exactly what you want when a seven-year-old is losing patience with a three-lap Rainbow Road.
Knockout Tour gets two new routes, Propeller Rally and Turnip Rally. There's a new Spectator Mode for online and LAN rooms, so the person who got knocked out can watch the rest instead of staring at a menu, and rooms now go up to 26 people with 24 actually racing. Time Trials show your lap times now, not just the total, and Nintendo's notes list a round of item and balance changes plus bug fixes.
It's free, it's version 1.8.0, and it went out on 9 September US time, so most consoles will have pulled it down overnight. If yours hasn't, highlight the game on the home menu and check for a software update.
