The shark game with the nature-documentary narrator is getting a sequel, and for the first time a Nintendo console is on the list from the start.
Maneater 2 was announced during PlayStation's State of Play on 3 September, in the early hours of Friday our time. It's coming in 2027 to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. No quarter, no date, no price yet. Tripwire Interactive is developing and self-publishing digitally, with Boston studio Demiurge as co-developer, and PLAION handles boxed copies worldwide, so a physical Australian release is likely even though nobody has confirmed one.
The setting moves from the original's Gulf Coast to Neptune's Kingdom, a luxury island theme park and resort themed on the Roman Empire. You play a bull shark that crashes an invite-only preview event full of influencers and media. The original's three pillars, eat, explore and evolve, get a fourth: escape the park. Tripwire is talking about five genetic modifications, new prey including pufferfish, jumbo crab, piranha and grouper, thrill rides to swim under and a bar precinct called Mojitodale. Trip Westhaven, the mockumentary narrator, is back, and so is Chris Parnell voicing him.
It isn't rated yet, but Tripwire is expecting an M in the US and an 18 from PEGI, so don't expect the Australian classification to be gentle either. The studio says the first Maneater and its Truth Quest expansion have passed 20 million players since 2020. One more detail from the Steam page worth knowing: Tripwire discloses that it used AI-assisted tools during development for prototyping, coding, testing and documentation, and states that all player-facing art, UI, effects, music, voice work and marketing were made by people.
