Final Fantasy 14 launched on Switch 2 yesterday, 4 August. The eShop carries a Starter Edition, a Complete Edition and a Complete Collector's Edition, and to mark the launch both versions of the Complete Edition are 30% off until Thursday 13 August.

The launch deal is better than it first looks. Square Enix is waiving subscription fees for roughly a month after release for everyone, to keep the servers stable while the new crowd pours in. After that, the normal 30 day free period for registering a new platform kicks in. The Switch 2 version needs its own subscription, which is the part worth knowing before you buy, though if you already have game time running on another platform, the Switch 2 subscription comes at half price. You do not need Nintendo Switch Online to play, and if you do have it, you get one extra aetheryte you can teleport to for free.

Then there is the famous free trial, which is also live on Switch 2. It covers the base game A Realm Reborn plus the Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers expansions, hundreds of hours of story before you pay a cent. Existing players can bring their current character across by linking the same service account, though be careful on first launch: the Nintendo account link to your Square Enix account is permanent once it is made.

One honest warning on the practical side. Reporting around the launch puts the full install at roughly 117GB, which is a serious slice of a Switch 2's storage, so plan for that before you start the download at 8pm on school night.
