Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Definitive Edition has launched on Nintendo Switch 2, landing in the middle of the series' 40th anniversary year.
Square Enix confirmed the Switch 2 version is out now alongside the game's existing Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC releases. It follows the Luminary, a hero hunted for a fate he doesn't yet understand, on a journey built around the cast he picks up along the way. Series creator Yuji Horii, character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama are all credited on the project.
The Definitive Edition carries the extras added back in 2019: new character side stories, a retro 2D mode, the 16-bit world of Tickington, a choice between English and Japanese voiceover, and the option to swap the fully orchestrated soundtrack for the original synthesised one. Photo mode is also included. Square Enix hasn't detailed anything unique to the Switch 2 build itself, such as resolution or frame rate targets, beyond confirming the port exists.
The launch sits inside a busier week for the franchise. Dragon Quest passed 100 million units sold worldwide this month as part of the 40th anniversary push, and Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon, Classic HD is also out now across Switch 2, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. A free demo for the newly announced Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, due 3 December, is live as well. For anyone who has picked up a Switch 2 and wants a way into the series, XI S remains the easiest entry point Square Enix has, and the retro modes give long-time fans a reason to come back too.
