The announcement went out through the official Dragon Quest accounts, with a short video from series creator Yuji Horii thanking players. The 100 million figure counts physical shipments and digital sales together across every game in the series, which now includes mainline entries, the Monsters spin-offs, the Builders games, Heroes, and the recent run of HD-2D remakes.

Those remakes have done a lot of the recent lifting. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined all shipped in the past two years, and Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon Classic HD surprise launched on 9 September across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch and PC.

The next one is Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, due 3 December 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch and PC. A demo is already up on all of those platforms, and Horii's video points people towards it. Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, the next mainline game, is still in development with no date.

The series has always sold far harder in Japan than anywhere else, which is a big part of why Square Enix has leaned on the HD-2D remakes to build the audience overseas. The 40th anniversary year still has the Withered World launch and its demo to run through before December.
